The Mezuza
The mezuzah (plural: mezuzim) contains a hand-written scroll
on which the text of the morning and evening prayers (Deuteronomy 6:4-9 and
11:13-21) are written. The scroll is made of parchment, the same material that
from which Torah scrolls are made.
The Torah commands us to place the prayers on the doorposts of our homes. Mezuzim, then, are essentially mini-Torahs, written with the reverence and reflection with which the torah scrolls are written. As the parchments are sacred texts, a mezuza case is used to enclose the parchment scroll. Since my website is, in a sense, my virtual home, I have placed a virtual mezuza upon its virtual doorpost.
